From jokes about the devastating Los Angeles fires to a powerful message for Donald Trump, Chappelle kept the comedy coming and his audience captivated. Here’s a breakdown of some of the standout moments from his appearance, plus a look at the unforgettable comedy sketches and performances.

Chappelle Tackles the LA Fires with Humor

One of the most memorable moments in Chappelle’s opening monologue was his take on the Los Angeles fires. The comedian joked about how he wasn’t initially thrilled about hosting SNL, but once he took the job, chaos erupted in LA. He shared his observations of people’s reactions online, with many wishing harm upon celebrities affected by the fires. His comedic response? A tongue-in-cheek commentary on how some people simply “can’t see past their own pain.”

Chappelle also delved into the conspiracy theories surrounding the fires. He humorously suggested that God might be punishing people in LA, while notably mentioning how West Hollywood (famously known as “Gabor Hood”) was unscathed. With his classic style, Chappelle made light of the bizarre theories, drawing laughs with his unfiltered take.

Message to Donald Trump: Empathy and Humanity

Chappelle’s monologue was not just a platform for humor but also a chance for some political commentary. As the country was nearing Donald Trump’s inauguration, Chappelle addressed the president directly, urging him to lead with empathy. His message was clear: regardless of political leanings, everyone is counting on the president, and humanity should never be forgotten. He made a poignant call for empathy for displaced people, referencing both those in California and those overseas in Palestine.

Iconic Sketches and Characters Make a Return

No Chappelle appearance would be complete without his beloved characters making a comeback. This episode of SNL saw the return of Silky Johnson and Ashley Larry, characters from Chappelle’s earlier sketches that had fans in stitches. These iconic characters brought their unique flavor to the comedy sketches, with the hilarious “pop the balloon” game getting a spoof on the show.
